Although sex-based employment discrimination was outlawed in the U.S. more than 50 years ago, the #MeToo movement has underscored the fact that we still have a long way to go in realizing full equality between the sexes at work and elsewhere. Our national consciousness around the problems of power abuse/sexual harassment in the workplace, its facilitation by third parties, and the obstacles faced by those seeking to stop the offending behavior, has been raised. Leaders, managers, and professionals in all employment sectors are now left to consider the health of their own business communities, and their respective roles in creating and maintaining a safe, professional, and respectful work environment for all.
To bring focus to these important issues in the building industry, Women in the Building Industry is pleased to present a two-hour seminar entitled ?Lead with a Handshake: Setting the Tone for Professional and Respectful Work Relationships in the Building Industry.? Topics addressed in the seminar will include:
Background on the law of workplace sexual harassment, and components of typical employer anti-harassment policies
- Recognizing, understanding, and navigating gray areas of conduct with professionalism and respect
- Understanding why individuals experiencing workplace concerns often do not raise/report them
- Understanding the different roles individuals in our professional communities may play ? offender, target, bystander, and upstander ? and how we can help ourselves and others when we or they are playing these different roles
- Proactive steps that leaders and managers can take to maintain safe, professional, and respectful work environments
